Things to do when installing a new Windows 11 PC.

Apps to Install

  • You can grab lots of these quickly through Ninite
    • Chrome
    • Steam
    • Discord
    • Blender
    • VLC
    • Audacity
    • WizTree
  • Password Manager
  • Sharp Keys from the Microsoft Store
    • Use it to remap Caps Lock as CTRL
  • Visual Studio
  • Git for Windows
    • Choose yes to installing the Terminal profile when going through the installer.
    • For line endings, check in and out as is.

Keyboard Layout Setup

Get the UK layout someone made on the forum here. Run through the installer. Then go to language settings and you should see the default UK QWERTY and the Colemak UK layouts.

If QWERTY is at the top of the list you can remove it and re-add it again so it’s at the bottom, this should mean Colemak is the default when you boot up the PC

Windows Configuration

Remove as much junk as possible from the Taskbar. Don’t need most default apps.

Go to Settings > Personalisation > Taskbar and hide the search field and widgets icon.

In Settings > Personalisation > Lock Screen, set the lock screen to a picture which then lets you turn off the garbage tips and tricks or whatever they are. Who thought that was a thing I have no idea.

In the Terminal settings. Set the default profile to Git Bash, and set the default theme to One Half Dark
